The Hague International Model United Nations
The THIMUN conference is an independent, non-governmental educational initiative designed to connect young people from across the world and engage them in dialogue about major global issues – such as human rights violations, environmental protection, questions of war and peace, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By creating a space where students discuss complex international challenges, THIMUN encourages solution-focused debate and helps participants understand the underlying causes of global tensions.
From local initiative to global network
What began in 1968 as a small Model United Nations (MUN) conference in The Hague gradually grew into a global platform. The THIMUN Foundation was formally established in 1981, and the conference has since become one of the world’s leading educational simulations of international diplomacy. During the event, students represent countries or organizations and take part in discussions that mirror the structure and procedures of the United Nations. As they work together to develop resolutions, young delegates learn to look beyond national perspectives and practice genuine international cooperation.
Participation & conference programme
THIMUN welcomes returning schools and invites new schools to apply through a formal registration process. Each edition is supported by research guides prepared by Student Officers, covering topics from committees such as the General Assembly (GA), Security Council (SC), ECOSOC, the Environment and Sustainable Development Commissions, the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the NATO Summit.
Global educational impact
Today, THIMUN welcomes approximately 3,200 students and teachers from around 200 schools worldwide. The organisation has also expanded internationally, with conferences held in Singapore and Qatar in 2025. In addition, many affiliated events follow the THIMUN model, including RRSMUN (Royal Russell School, United Kingdom), BEIMUN (Beijing, China), and RIMUN (Rome, Italy), alongside numerous others held each year. The next main edition is scheduled for 26–30 January 2026 at the World Forum Convention Center, The Hague.
