The Hague has presented a new vision that further reinforces its position as the international City of Peace and Justice.

The city outlines how global challenges – including human rights, climate justice and security – are increasingly intertwined with developments in The Hague itself. It also sets out how the city uses its standing on the world stage to benefit both residents and international partners.

“For 125 years, The Hague has shown that cooperation works. We have grown into a place where hundreds of organisations work together to build peace and justice, and that is something we can be proud of. This unique network in our city is recognised across the world. In the years ahead, we want to strengthen our position as the international City of Peace and Justice even further. Not only beyond our borders, but especially here in our own city. By involving residents and exchanging knowledge with other cities worldwide, we make each other stronger. In doing so, we help make The Hague – and the world around us – a more pleasant and more just place.”

Deputy Mayor Mariëlle Vavier (Youth, Education, International Affairs), Municipality of The Hague

More than 500 international organisations make The Hague unique

The Hague is the world’s third UN city and is home to around 500 international institutions and organisations, including the International Court of Justice at the Peace Palace and the International Criminal Court. These courts, knowledge institutes and other organisations work globally to advance peace and justice, and together they provide more than 20,000 jobs. Their activities contribute over €2.7 billion each year to The Hague’s economy. Attracting these organisations is not something the city can take for granted: in recent years, The Hague has worked hard to strengthen its role as a host city and to build its profile as the international city of peace and justice. The growing number of international institutions demonstrates that The Hague is seen globally as an attractive place to establish a presence.

Responsible growth

Because The Hague is in such high demand, it must make careful choices. Space in the city is limited, so The Hague will determine with care which organisations can establish themselves here in the future. In the coming years, the aim is not to attract as many new institutions as possible, but the right ones: organisations and conferences that genuinely add value to The Hague as a city of peace and justice, for example in the fields of human rights and security.

From local neighbourhoods to the world stage

As major global challenges increasingly affect daily life, cities are playing a more prominent role. The Hague draws on its international network to address local issues more effectively and to learn from other cities. Whether the focus is climate adaptation, protection against digital threats or ensuring access to justice for all, sharing experiences and seeking solutions together helps The Hague become stronger and better prepared for the future. The city works actively with other cities and participates in European and global urban networks, enabling local and international issues to be closely connected.

Bringing peace and justice closer to residents

The Hague’s international character should become more visible and tangible for the people who live here. This includes educational projects on peace and justice, exchanges between schools in The Hague and international organisations, and events or exhibitions that show how global issues shape everyday life in the city. In this way, The Hague’s international identity becomes something that everyone can see, experience and share.

With this vision, The Hague links the global to the local: from cooperation with international networks to projects that make the city’s international character visible to its residents. In doing so, The Hague remains not only a welcoming host city for those working on peace and justice, but also becomes a guiding city where these values are lived every day.
