As of 10 June 2025, The Bird of Peace, a sculpture by Bosnian-born artist Mirza Moric, is on display by the main entrance of The Hague City Hall. The artwork was brought to The Hague on the initiative of the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina, H.E. Mr Almir Šahović.

The sculpture will remain at City Hall until 21 September 2025, International Day of Peace. Its installation is part of the broader Road to Summit programme in the lead-up to the NATO Summit in The Hague.

Mirza Moric and the art of the Bird

Mirza Moric was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1954 and has lived in Paris since 1977. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Sarajevo in 1976, followed by studies at the National Schools of Fine Arts in Munich and Paris from 1977 to 1984.

Moric’s contemporary artwork has been exhibited widely across Europe, as well as in Los Angeles and Tokyo. Many of Moric’s bird sculptures are rooted in what he describes as “internal movement”—expressions of the inner world. These forms, often abstract and ascending in shape, echo themes found in Sufi mysticism and the writings of 12th-century Persian poet Attar, who described birds in search of spiritual enlightenment. In this way, Moric’s birds are not just artworks, but reflections on the human condition.

Peace

Bird of Peace honours the victims of war

This ‘Bird of Peace’, created in early 2022, is dedicated to victims of war around the world. The artist chose white granite from Sidobre in the Tarn region of France for the sculpture—a highly resistant material that symbolises the resilience of humanity in the face of adversity. On the wings of the bird, faces of women, children and philosophers are carved, representing both suffering and wisdom. The bird is shown sitting on its nest, prepared to take flight. It is meant as a messenger of peace and an expression of collective hope. The artist sees the sculpture as a lasting visual reminder of the essential role peace plays in safeguarding human dignity.

The official unveiling of the sculpture will take place on Thursday 19 June, in the presence of the Mayor of The Hague, and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
